Research description: This is the first calf of 120 Holstein heifers being enrolled to investigate the effects of naturally sourced caffeine (Calf Perk, TechMix) on calf health, vigour and overall performance. Calves will be followed for 4 weeks and sample collection consists of blood samples, vigour and health scores, activity tracked using a monitor, and weekly body weights.
alt text: In a brightly lit calf barn, a black and white Holstein calf is leaping in the air while making her way to the scale for her weekly weigh in. A pink bandage can be seen on the hind leg which is used to attach an activity monitor. In the background are pens of other calves with white walls and metal barred doors.
