Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disability caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. Each person with FASD is unique and has many strengths and assets. However, many experience multiple adversities impacting health and wellbeing. This photo is taken of Dr. McLachlan on FASD International Awareness Day (September 9th) and acknowledges the ‘Red Shoes Rock’ campaign, seeking to promote awareness and change conversations about FASD. An important focus of Dr. McLachlan’s program of research aims to understand the experiences, risks, and needs of individuals with FASD who become involved in the criminal justice system, and to inform effective prevention, screening, assessment, and intervention approaches.
