Strategic Partnership Grants for Networks

Description

Strategic Partnership Grants for Networks (SPG?N) fund large-scale, multidisciplinary research projects in targeted research areas that require a network approach and that involve collaboration between academic researchers and Canadian-based organizations.  The four targets areas for this year’s competition are: Advanced Manufacturing; Environment and Agriculture; Information and Communications Technologies; Natural Resources and Energy.

Eligibility

The applicant should be an established researcher with a solid track record in collaborative research, student training and grant management, and who demonstrates the leadership and other skills necessary for managing a complex, interdisciplinary, multi-institutional project. The network must involve a minimum of five academic researchers who are eligible to receive NSERC funding, from at least three separate departments, faculties or institutions. 

Funding Availability

Category A: The network applies for SPG?N funds between $500,000 and $1.125 million per year for five years, for a maximum request of $5.5 million.

Category B: The network can request NSERC funding between $500,000 and $1.125 million per year for five years, for a maximum request of $5.5 million. However, NSERC requires a cash leverage of $1 from industry and government partners for every $3 from NSERC.

Maximum Project Value

The anticipated budget for the 2016 Strategic Network Grants competition is expected to result in three (3) awards across the four target areas

Indirect Costs

No indirect costs are required on the amount requested from NSERC; however, indirect costs may apply on amounts requested from partners.

Highlights for the 2016 Strategic Partnership Grants for Networks (SPG?N) Competition

  • Updated target areas are now in place. Check the descriptions prior to preparing your application.
  • The anticipated budget for the 2016 SPG?N competition is expected to result in up to three new awards.
  • The month for submitting preliminary applications has changed from previous years. The new deadline is April 1, 2016.
  • Preliminary applications in Category B must follow the content restrictions stated below in the use of the extra five pages.
  • Remember to include the mandatory element of an international engagement strategy.

How to Apply

Please review the requirements for the submission of a Preliminary Application.

Preliminary Applications include:

  • An Application for a Grant (Form 101; pages 1,2 and 3 only).
  • Form 100 (for the applicant and theme leaders; maximum of 8 Forms 100).
  • A description of the proposed Strategic Network (maximum 12 pages plus one page for references for Category A applicants; 16 pages plus one page for references for Category B applicants – Category B applicants must follow the content restrictions stipulated for the extra 5 pages).
  • Letters of Support from each industrial and government partner
  • International Collaborator Statements of Interest (maximum 5)

An Application for a Grant (Form 101, pages 1, 2 and 3) can be prepared using the On-line System, but two printed copies must be mailed, along with an unlocked electronic copy of the preliminary application saved into a single PDF document. Preliminary applications cannot be submitted online. All preliminary applications must follow the NSERC On-line Presentation and Attachment Standards. NSERC must receive the preliminary application (paper submission only) by the deadline date at 4:00 p.m. (ET).
