Description

The RSC administers over 20 prestigious awards, most of which are awarded to those at various career stages in recognition of outstanding achievement. This is the list of medals and awards available for the 2023 round:

  • Henry Marshall Tory Medal (Science)
    • The award is for outstanding research in any branch of astronomy, chemistry, mathematics, physics or an allied science.
  • Jason A. Hannah Medal (Medicine)
    • The award is for an important publication in the history of medicine.
  • John L. Synge Award (Mathematics)
    • The award is given to acknowledge outstanding research in any of the branches of the mathematical sciences.
    • In cases where there are two or more strong candidates, some preference is given to those whose age is not over forty in the year of the award.
  • McLaughlin Medal (Medical science)
    • The medal is awarded annually for important research of sustained excellence in any branch of medical sciences.
  • Michael P. Païdoussis Medal (Mechanics)
    • For recognition of an individual who has made outstanding contributions to research, education and leadership in applied mechanics.
  • Miroslaw Romanowski Medal (Scientific solutions to environmental challenges)
    • The medal is awarded annually for significant contributions to the resolution of scientific aspects of environmental problems or for important improvements to the quality of an ecosystem in all aspects — terrestrial, atmospheric and aqueous — brought about by scientific means.​
  • Pierre Chauveau Medal (Humanities)
    • The medal is for a distinguished contribution to knowledge in the humanities.
  • Rutherford Memorial Medal (Chemistry)
    • Awarded annually for oustanding research in chemistry in the formative stage of the candidate's career.
  • Rutherford Memorial Medal (Physics)
    • Awarded annually for outstanding research in physics in the formative stage of the candidate's career.
  • Sir John William Dawson Medal (Multiple Domains)
    • The award is for important contributions of knowledge in multiple domains.
  • Yvan Allaire Medal (Governance)
    • An annual award for outstanding contribution in governance 

Eligibility

A nomination is required for an RSC Medal or Award. You can be nominated by a RSC Fellow or be nominated by the Institution (University of Guelph). Candidates must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and have held that statues for the last three or more years.

Prize

These are the prizes for the following awards:

  • Henry Marshall Tory Medal
    • The winnier will receive a gold plated silver medal.
  • Jason A. Hannah Medal
    • The winner receives a bronze medal and a cash award of $1,500.
  • John L. Synge Award
    • The winner will receive a diploma.
  • McLaughlin Medal
    • The winner will receive a gold plated silver medal.
  • Michael P. Païdoussis Medal (Mechanics)
    • The winner will receive a medal and cash award of $1,000.
  • Miroslaw Romanowsk Medal
    • The winner will receive $3,000, a bronze medal, and an annual lecture series.
  • Pierre Chauveau Medal
    • The winner receives a silver medal.
  • Rutherford Memorial Medal (Chemistry)
    • The winner will recieve a gold plated silver medal.
  • Rutherford Memorial Medal (Physics)
    • The winner will receive a gold plated silver medal.
  • Sir John William Dawson Medal
    • The winner receives a silver medal.
  • Yvan Allaire Medal
    • The winner will receive a medal and $5,000.

Internal Deadline

If you wish to be considered for VPR nomination: 

  1. We recommend discussing your interest in this award with your College Research Manager and Associate Dean (Research).
  2. Complete the Expression of Interest document
  3. Send the completed Expression of Interest document and a CV to ailsakay@uoguelph.ca and copy your College Research Manager. 

Career interruptions due to parental leave, family care, extended illness, or community responsibilities will not negatively impact the committee’s assessment of a candidate’s research productivity. These will be taken into consideration when EOIs are assessed.

External Deadline

If your nomination will be submitted by a nominator other than the VPR, please submit directly to the sponsor by the external deadline. The completed nomination form and accompanying documents should be emailed to nominations@rsc-src.ca.

Please also submit a copy of the full nomination research.services@uoguelph.ca. Where the award also has a monetary value please include an OR-5 with the copy of the nomination to research.services@uoguelph.ca.

How to Apply

The Vice-President (Research) encourages nominations for this prestigious award, and will serve as nominator for those nominees recommended by the Honours and Awards Advisory Committee. If you wish to nominate a colleague or to be considered for VPR nomination:

  1. We recommend discussing your interest in this award with your College Research Manager and Associate Dean (Research).
  2. Complete the Expression of Interest document
  3. Send the completed Expression of Interest document and a CV to ailsakay@uoguelph.ca and copy your College Research Manager by the internal deadline.
