Description
The RSC administers over 20 prestigious awards, most of which are awarded to those at various career stages in recognition of outstanding achievement. This is the confirmed list of Medals and Awards available in the 2020 competition.
Sciences
- Rutherford Memorial Medal (Chemistry)
- For research in chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates under forty years old.
- Rutherford Memorial Medal (Physics)
- For research in physics. Preference will be given to candidates under forty years old.
- Bancroft Award
- Awarded for publication, instruction, and research in the earth sciences that have conspicuously contributed to public understanding and appreciation of the subject.
- Flavelle Medal
- Awarded for outstanding contribution to biological science during the preceding ten years or for significant additions to a prior outstanding contribution to biological science.
- McLaughlin Medal
- For important research of sustained excellence in any branch of medical sciences.
- John L. Synge Award
- For outstanding research in any of the branches of the mathematical sciences (preference to candidates under 40)
- Miroslaw Romanowsk Medal (+ $3,000)
- Awarded for contributions towards the resolution of scientific aspects of environmental problems or for important improvements to the quality of an ecosystem in all aspects - terrestrial, atmospheric and aqueous - brought about by scientific means.
- Willet G. Miller Medal
- For research in solid earth sciences or in ocean sciences.
Humanities and Social Sciences
- Innis-Gérin Medal
- Awarded for distinguished and sustained contributions to the literature of the social sciences including human geography and social psychology.
- Ursula Franklin Award in Gender Studies
- Awarded for furthering the understanding of issues concerning gender.
- J.B. Tyrrell Historical Medal
- Awarded for outstanding work in the history of Canada.
- Lorne Pierce Medal
- Awarded for special significance and conspicuous merit in imaginative or critical literature written in either English or French (critical literature dealing with Canadian subjects has priority over critical literature of equal merit that does not deal with Canadian subjects).
- Yvan Allaire Medal (+ $5,000)
- For outstanding contribution in governance (Social Sciences).
Eligibility
A nomination is required for an RSC Medal or Award. You can be nominated by a RSC Fellow or be nominated by the Institution (University of Guelph).
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or be a Permanent Resident for the past 3 years.

If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.

How to Apply
The Vice-President (Research) encourages nominations for these prestigious awards, and will serve as nominator for those nominees recommended by the Honours and Awards Advisory Committee. If you wish to nominate a colleague or to be considered for VPR nomination, please submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to research.honours@uoguelph.ca by the internal deadline.
An Expression of Interest will include:
- A draft letter (two-three pages) addressed to the VPR which outlines how you/your nominee meets the criteria of the award;
- An up-to-date CV (up to 10 pages) for nominee (and each member of the team, if applicable); and
- A short letter or email from the Associate Dean (Research) or College Research Manager indicating the College's support for the nomination.
If your nomination will be submitted by a RSC Fellow, and therefore does not require the Vice-President's endorsement, please submit a copy of the application by the external deadline to research.services@uoguelph.ca
