Description

Created in 1998, the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards honours – every year – 5 eminent women scientists from 5 regions of the world.

The scientific fields considered for the awards alternate every other year between Life and Environmental Sciences (even years) and Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science (odd years).

The 2024 award will designate five outstanding researchers in Life and Environmental Sciences (fields not yet confirmed). The five laureates will be selected by an international jury for their exceptional contribution to scientific advancement.

The selection criteria is:

  • The candidates outstanding contribution to the general advancement of science
  • The impact of the research on the current state of the relevant scientific field (number, quality, impact of publications, conference presentations, patents)
  • Recognition by peers within the discipline through publications
  • Recognition of the candidate's commitments to education, teaching, mentoring and/or the UN Sustainable Development Goals more broadly.

Eligibility

To be considered eligible for an award, the candidate must be nominated by an eminent scientist, such as heads of universities and scientific institutions, members academies of science, research chairs, full professors and former laureates. 

At a minimum, qualified nominators must be holders of a Ph.D. The candidate must:

  • Be recognized for her personal scientific excellence among the international scientific community;
  • Be actively involved in scientific research; and
  • Be involved in any field of Life and Environmental Sciences

Self-nominations are not eligible. One candidate is selection for each of the five geographic regions (North America is one).

Prize

An award of €100,000 is given to each of the five laureates selected by a jury of internationally renowned experts.

If you wish to be considered for VPR nomination: 
  1. We recommend discussing your interest in this award with your College Research Manager and Associate Dean (Research).
  2. Complete the Expression of Interest document
  3. Send the completed Expression of Interest document and a CV to ailsakay@uoguelph.ca and copy your College Research Manager. 

Career interruptions due to parental leave, family care, extended illness or community responsibilities will not negatively impact the committee’s assessment of a candidate’s research productivity. These will be taken into consideration when EOIs are assessed.

External Deadline

If your nomination will be submitted by a nominator other than the VPR, please submit directly to the sponsor by the external deadline. Please also submit a copy of the full nomination and OR-5 to research.services@uoguelph.ca.

How to Apply

The Vice-President (Research) encourages nominations for this prestigious award and will serve as nominator for those nominees recommended by the Honours and Awards Advisory Committee. If you wish to nominate a colleague or to be considered for VPR nomination:

  1. We recommend discussing your interest in this award with your College Research Manager and Associate Dean (Research).
  2. Complete the Expression of Interest document
  3. Send the completed Expression of Interest document and a CV to ailsakay@uoguelph.ca and copy your College Research Manager by the internal deadline.

As this is an international prize, the University may engage the Global Excellence Initiative to coordinate external review of nominations.
